State requirement notes: how we source and update them
Where the editorial notes come from, how they are dated, and why they hedge to the clerk.
Each state’s note is written from official sources — the state’s vital-records office, the issuing court or clerk, and the statute where it is clear.
Every note carries a "Reviewed" date so you know how fresh it is, and a link to the issuing office so you can confirm the current rule at the source.
Where a rule genuinely varies by county — registration, return windows, who may officiate — the note says so and points you to the county clerk rather than guessing. A confident wrong answer is worse than an honest "confirm locally."
These notes are informational only, not legal advice. They help you know what to ask; the issuing office gives the binding answer.
We review the notes on a schedule and re-stamp the date when we do. If you find a note that has drifted from your county’s current practice, tell us and we will check it.
